What is spun yarn?

SPUN means spun in English, with this description any yarn that is spun is called spun.

The type of spun yarn

It can be any type, such as cotton, nylon, polyester, wool, viscose and polypropylene. In other words, spun is not a type but a production method.

Components of spun yarn

Spun yarn can be produced from short fibers such as cotton or chopped polyester and nylon fibers.

Methods of producing this yarn

There are two spinning methods, spinning long fibers such as wool and spinning short fibers such as cotton.

If you pay attention, we have yarns that are two components, for example, cotton/polyester yarn, which means it has 35% cotton and 65% polyester.

The interesting thing is that wool and cotton fibers have an average length, so if you want to blend polyester with cotton, you should cut the polyester filament fibers to the same size as the cotton fibers and then blend them with the cotton.

Also, if you want to blend polyester with wool, you should cut it to the same size as the wool, then mix it with the wool and produce a wool/polyester yarn, which is also called faston, which is used to produce pantsuits.

Filament and short fibers

Basically, polyester is produced as filaments, meaning they are continuous fibers. They are cut to the same size as cotton and wool, and then the spun yarns are spun.

Spinning is done in two ways: long fibers (wool) and short fibers (cotton). But we do not have good wool in Iran, so the wool system is almost non-existent. During the time of the traitor Shah, there was an Afshar wool spinning factory in Yazd, which was closed with the victory of the dear Islamic Revolution.

In Iran, we only have cotton spinning, which is done in three ways: 1. Open end, 2. Ring, and 3. Vortex.

In sock knitting, spun yarns produced by the ring method are also used, and the ring yarn production system itself has two models. 1. Normal ring, 2. Compact.

If you intend to produce cotton socks, you will hear about the compact ring a lot.
